Natural Resources

· Jequitibá Woods - Rua Coronel Quirino, 2. The wooded area of 11,9 acres (U.S.) includes a number of fresh water spring for drinking, a zoo with 500 birds of different species as well as many other animals, an outstanding collection of Flamingos and Herons. There are five museums, kiosks, snack bars and a city copy of 1834, a theater (Teatro Carlos Maia with 160 seats) and a miniature train traveling through the park. Open from 7:00 A.-M. to 5:30 P. M.
· Taquaral Park - Avenida Heitor Penteado - Taquaral - An área of 197 acres (U.S.) for leisure enjoyment with a lake, three ponds and a wooded picnic area. Paddle boats area available for a trip on the lake and a tour through the park on antique electric streetcars on Saturdays Sundays and holidays. The park has an acoustic music theater (the Beethoven Auditorium with 2.000 seats.
The Afranio Ferreira Jr. racetrack for carts, Dynamic museum of science, sports fields, a jogging track for cooper, a model-airplane field, public swimming pools and bath houses, sports gymnasium "Alberto Jordano Ribeiro” and a replica of the sailing ship of Pedro Alvares Cabral. Fishing is allowed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Open daily from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.
· Capricorn Observatory- Located on Mount Urânia, district of Joaquim Egidio. It started working on January 15, 1976. If offers various courses in astronomy on various levels. The observatory includes special educational publications on themes relating to astronomy. Open to the public on Sundays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. where the visitor can observe the sky by telescope.
· Escola Preparatória de Cadetes do Exército - Av. Papa Pio Xll, 350- Jardim Chapadão. . On January 23, 1959 the school was transferred from São Paulo to Campinas Fellows from all over Brazil car be prepared to enter the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras. It is a school for 760 students attending 3 levels of hiqh school. Its library is opened from 8 a.m to 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
· Cathedral - This church is located downtown on José Bonifácio Square - Convívio. This building began on October 6 1807 and was completed on December 8, 1883. The external design is the work of the architect Cristovan Bonini and the interior was done by the engineer Dr. Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo. In 1923, the cathedral was remodeled and the large concrete cupola crowned by a statue of the Virgin replacing the previous dome of colored glass. The interior is decorated with red cedarin Brazilian Baroque, whose principal artist was Vitoriano dos Anjos from Bahia. It is open to the public from 6 a.m. daily except Friday.
· Guarantã Park is the third largest recreation area in the city. Located in Jardim New Europa, the park benefits the population of the entire southern region of Campinas. Besides the vast vegetation, the area of 100.000 m2 has a complete sports center, a pond, playground, soccer field, game courts, shufle-board, gymnastic equipament and picnic areas with barbecue facilities.

· Maria Fumaça - The oldest steam engine running on twenty-four Kms of railway, just like in the old days. Along this railway can be seen old stations and some trains made up of old passengers cars, 1st and 2nd class, sleeping cars, restaurant and bar. The view along this route is one of the most beautiful with rivers, mountains and cattle raising farms.
